Wonder Festival 2017 (Winter): misc Garage Kits (Part 2)

Here we are, the final garage kit gallery which, as tradition dictates, is the final miscellaneous gallery.

Well, I don’t think anyone expected a figure of the girl with the pearl earring! Still, it’s a mighty impressive figure. The Mecha musume kit is also insanely detailed and worth a loot (or several) as is the Godzilla bust.

Otherwise, that’s about it for this Wonder Festival. I hope you all enjoyed the galleries of the various garage kits which were on display at the event. Hopefully, the summer event will impress us with even more works!

Review 1: Hot Toys MMS241 Captain America: TWS 1/6 scale Winter Soldier Collectible Figure

This was part of my November 2014 haul (see previous post HERE)

James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as a sidekick character in Captain America Comics #1 (cover-dated March 1941), published by Timely Comics (Marvel’s 1940s predecessor). Decades later, the original Bucky was brought back from supposed death as the Winter Soldier, and even as Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead.

Sebastian Stan portrays Bucky in the feature film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and the Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). As Steve Rogers’ best friend, who has re-emerged as an enhanced brainwashed assassin after being thought killed in action during World War II, Bucky is now the Winter Soldier.

In the trailers for the film, one of the most memorable moments was when Captain America (Steve Rogers) hurls his shield at the Winter Soldier to try and stop him from getting away after he has “killed” Nick Fury. He turns and stops the shield in mid flight with his metal arm. It tells of the intense conflict and battle that is to follow. At that point, we still didn’t know who the Winter Soldier was (although those of us who have read the comic books already know the answer to that question).
This is the recently released Hot Toys MMS241 Captain America: The Winter Soldier 1/6th scale Sebastian Stan as Bucky / Winter Soldier Collectible Figure (Note: 1/6 shield NOT included. Used for photography purposes)

The Hot Toys Winter Soldier packaging is standard as with all of Hot Toys’ other releases. In the past, Hot Toys did try to be creative with their box packaging. An example was the Hot Toys MMS82 Movie Masterpiece Series 1/6 scale Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands fully pose-able action figure (check out the pictures HERE). Nowadays, you just lift the lid / cover and the figure with his accessories is found inside, but not before a card that displays an actual picture of the figure in full bleed which is placed over the tray holding the figure and accessories.
Here’s the 12-inch Winter Soldier collectible figure with all the 1/6 scale accessories. That’s a lot of accessories. I don’t remember Hot Toys including so many accessories with their figure for a while now. One of the Hot Toys figures that came with a lot of accessories was the Blade II collectible figure that was released in 2010. You can see the review and pictures posted earlier in my toy blog HERE.

Hot Toys "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" 1/6th Collectible Figure: Sebastian Stan as Bucky

continued from previous post

This is the part 2 review of Hot Toys MMS241 Captain America: The Winter Soldier 1/6th scale Sebastian Stan as Bucky / Winter Soldier 12-inch Collectible Figure. Having reviewed the box packaging and contents in my part 1 review (posted HERE) with detailed pictures of the 1/6 scale weapons and accessories as well as unmasked head sculpt turnaround views, this second toy blog post and review covers the masked head sculpt with goggles, and putting the 1/6 scale weapons in the hands of this 12-inch assassin of HYDRA.

In the 2014 American superhero film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky Barnes, has re-emerged as an enhanced brainwashed assassin called The Winter Soldier after being thought killed in action during World War II. Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America must battle to the death with his old buddy and pal Bucky (Sebastian Stan) who is now an agent of Hydra. Cap also must prevent Hydra from killing millions of innocent people via the launch of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s helicarriers.

First thing Steve Rogers tells Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) after his encounter with the Winter Soldier: “He’s fast… strong… and has a metal arm.” Cap more than meets his match when it comes to the Winter Soldier, partly because he too is a super soldier and partly because when Rogers realizes that Bucky is the Winter Soldier, he cannot bear to put his best friend down permanently, even though Bucky has no idea who Rogers is due to all the brain washing.

Click on them for bigger and better views.

When the Winter Soldier first appears in the film, it is in the scene where he takes down a fleeing Nick Fury who is being pursued by Hydra agents masquerading as police officers and S.W.A.T. operatives. The Winter Soldier’s face is all covered up with mask and goggles in order not to be recognized and incapacitates Fury’s souped up SUV by firing a magnetic disk charge from his remote bomb launcher, which is a modified FN Mk13 grenade launcher. The 12-inch Winter Soldier in his full all-black costume along with his weapons are all accurately reproduced in 1/6th scale by Hot Toys in this realization of the movie-based collectible figure.
The Winter Soldier carries a number of varied weapons on him and Hot Toys has faithfully produced every single one of them in 1/6th miniature scale with all the nice details. You can see all the weapons laid out neatly in my post HERE. The 1/6 scale weapons included with this Hot Toys 12-inch Winter Soldier collectible figure are: Colt M4A1 assault rifle fitted with M203A1 grenade launcher, Intratec TEC-38 Over Under Pistol (two tone nickel plated version), SIG-Sauer P226R pistol, FN Mk13 grenade launcher – aka remote bomb launcher (modified to fire magnetic disc-shaped explosive charge), CZ Vz. 61 E Skorpion submachine gun, COP 357 Derringer – .357 Magnum, two combat knives / daggers, one spike.
Here are close-up pictures of the Hot Toys Winter Soldier with mask head sculpt wearing the goggles to hide his identity. See the previous post HERE for the unmasked head sculpt of the Winter Soldier
The 1/6 scale Winter Soldier’s goggles are removed and put on via first removing the hair sculpture which is connected to the head by magnets
A closer look at the 1/6 scale Remote Bomb Launcher (modified FN Mk13 grenade launcher)
The Winter Soldier’s costume / outfit consists of: black leather-like top with embossed pattern, black pants with customized holsters for his weapons, black belt with pouches, black chest holster for his SMG which is mounted on his back, and a pair of black boots. In these pictures, he’s armed with the SIG-Sauer P226R pistol in his left hand and combat knife in his right hand. The 1/6 scale knife fits nicely in the knife grasping hand which is included.
CZ Vz. 61 E Skorpion submachine gun carried on the back of his armored vest and one of the two combat knives still sheathed on his lower back.
Here’s Hot Toys MMS241 Captain America: The Winter Soldier 1/6th scale Sebastian Stan as Bucky / Winter Soldier 12-inch Collectible Figure with his Colt M4A1 assault rifle fitted with M203A1 grenade launcher.
Hot Toys has produced a very nice and detailed movie figure of the Winter Soldier and everything on this figure is top notch in terms of quality and accuracy. Looks great, feels great!

November 2014 Haul: Hot Toys 1/6 Winter Soldier, Funko Pop! Jim Raynor & Marvel chibi

It’s already coming to the end of the year 2014 and there isn’t very much to share of my early November 2014 Haul: there’s Hot Toys MMS241 “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” 1/6th scale Winter Soldier 12-inch Collectible Figure, Funko StarCraft II Jim Raynor Marine Suit Pop! Vinyl Figure and Marvel Chibi mini figures. Not much to shout about but I’m really digging the Hot Toys 1/6 scale Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan in the movie. We know now that the Winter Soldier is really James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, Steve Rogers’ best friend, who has re-emerged as an enhanced brainwashed assassin after being thought killed in action during World War II.

Other non-1/6 scale stuff: Funko StarCraft II Jim Raynor Marine Suit Pop! Vinyl Figure and Marvel Chibi mini figures. Why? Because they were just too cute to resist and they are FUN to look at. Plus they don’t really take up a lot of space, space that is needed for more 12-inch figures.

Scroll down to see the rest of the pictures.
Click on them for bigger and better views.

Hot Toys MMS241 “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” 1/6th scale Winter Soldier 12-inch Collectible Figure is a great addition to the Marvel line of figures Hot Toys has been producing. More of this figure in the reviews to follow. In the meantime, you can check out the preview pictures posted earlier in my toy blog HERE.
From the StarCraft II real-time strategy series from Blizzard, a revolutionary Terran has been given the Pop! Vinyl treatment with this StarCraft Jim Raynor Marine Suit Pop! Vinyl Figure! Jim Raynor stands 3 3/4-inches tall, and makes a great gift for children and adult collectors alike.
I really like these Funko Pop! vinyl figures because they are all extremely cute but decided against starting another line of collectibles / toys because space is a big issue in our household, especially since I’ve already filled it up with lots and lots of 12-inch figures and other stuff. While the word “space” gives the notion and idea of boundless and limitless expanse, real space is pretty much constrained and lacking in the world we live in, more so in Singapore where we live in small apartments that seem to be getting smaller as the years go by.
Still, I couldn’t resist not picking up this StarCraft II Jim Raynor Marine Suit Pop! Vinyl Figure because the design really stood out for me. This isn’t my first Funko Pop! figure. I also got the Funko Pop! Heroes Batman and Robin vinyl figures from the classic TV series back in January 2014 which I posted HERE.
Chibi (ちび or チビ) is a Japanese slang word meaning “short person” or “small child”. The word has gained currency among fans of manga and anime. Its meaning is of someone or some animal that is small. It can be translated as “little”, but is not used the same way as chiisana [小さな] (tiny, small, little in Japanese) but rather cute. In English-speaking anime and manga fandom (otaku), the term chibi has mostly been conflated with the “super deformed” style of drawing characters with oversized heads or it can be used to describe child versions of characters.
And these Marvel Chibi mini figures are too darn cute! Not sure who produced these as I got them loose and apparently these twelve form the complete set. See the picture below for the Avengers assembled (minus Hawkeye). More on these later 🙂

The photo album for Marvel Minimates wave 55 (sold at comic book & specialty stores) includes some cool action photos (such as a leaping Batroc kicking Cap’s shield) as well as the expected conventional product images, packaging shots, and concept art.

The Minimates wave is currently hitting comic & specialty retail stores. Check out some highlights in the gallery or see the whole album on DST’s Facebook page.
