It’s fall, time to take your figmas to school

There are an endless number of figma schoolgirls out there (I counted, they’re infinite), but they’ve always lacked a school setting to hang out in. Max Factory is rectifying that now with the figmaPLUS line of display sets.

Two will be available in December: a classroom set and a street set. They’ll have a scenic backdrop, some models for various props (unassembled), and some papercraft items to top it all off.

Pre-orders are up now for ¥2,900 each. If you get them, I strongly recommend a pair of model clippers!

First 4 Figures announces Mega Man, we hope it’s a proto man

First 4 Figures has had a pretty good track record with their pieces. Digging into the golden days of gaming, they’ve brought out some great statues from Metroid, Zelda, and Sonic franchises. They’ve now stepped into the year 20XX with their first piece from Mega Man. Judging from their first prototype and the work that they’ve done before, maybe they need to step back into the lab again.

There’s a lot going right with this figure and just one thing really wrong with it. The base is taken from Mega Man 2, and with the limited version having LEDs installed in it. It’s a pose you would welcome in a Mega Man piece, but there’s just one thing staring at you: the face. Looking at it, the face just feels terribly off. It’s not original box art bad, it just doesn’t seem right. The lines under the eyes and the smirk are kind of off-putting. I want to like this, especially the limited version, but the eyes just don’t have it.

Perhaps they’ll fix this up and get things right. They’re certainly capable of doing so. They have until its release date sometime in spring of 2015. If you do find things acceptable in the future, the regular edition will run you $199.99 while the limited edition of 425 will cost $229.99.

It’s ALIVE! Funko’s brings life to Hikari Mystic Powers Frankenstein(‘s Monster)

Funko has shocked new life into its Hikari line with a “Mystic Powers” Frankenstein (a.k.a. Frankenstein’s Monster a.k.a. Adam). The release, which marks Frankenstein’s first appearance in the line, seems timed to celebrate the relatively recent Frankenstein Day.

Funko fans will no doubt recall that “Mystic Powers” was also the moniker for the coolest Hikari Skeletor deco and once again it’s been used in conjunction with a pretty nifty colorway. As with MP Skeletor, Franky features a golden head with wicked-looking red eyes. However, since the design sports less black paint, it has a more colorful appearance. The red notably carries over to the scar in Frankenstein’s head, giving a glistening fresh blood look, and appears in varying tones throughout the rest of the figure. Franky’s blue hands curiously stand in stark contrast with the rest of the figure although blue is naturally closer to his usual skin-tone.

Frankenstein will be the second classic Universal Studios Monster (or horror icon in general) to be added to the Hikari line, following the Creature from the Black Lagoon. While my preference will always be towards the Gillman, Franky is pretty awesome in his own way.

Funko’s Hikari Frankenstein can currently be pre-ordered for US$50 and is slated for a November release. If you adore him but don’t feel like dropping US$50, you can always try to win a copy via Funko’s Facebook contest.

It’s no trick! Nendoroid Halloween Miku has been fully unveiled

Mamitan has unveiled the fully painted Nendoroid Halloween Miku. As previously reported, the figure will be first available at Miku Expos in Los Angeles and New York City during October.

Nendo Halloween Miku is absolutely adorable, but I have to admit being a little baffled as to why the character is holding a candy cane. I mean, that’s really more of a Christmas thing; I can’t even recall ever seeing candy canes for sale except around the winter holidays. Did they run out of candy corn and think, “Well, this also has ‘candy’ in its name so it’ll be a decent substitute”? Given that the original artwork depicts Miku as being armed with a fencing sword, the fact that she’s instead holding a candy cane is even more unusual.

The character will apparently also come with a holiday-appropriate Jack-o’-Lantern (did you know that Jack-o’-Lanterns were originally made from turnips?) which matches her Halloween-y outfit. She even has these cute little vampire teeth! Although I adore the overall look, I’m going to try waiting in case the design also gets a figma.

For additional release information and a look at the artwork, be sure to check out our original coverage. Otherwise there’s a full image in the gallery.

It’s football season and ZCWO previews 1/6 Futbol Club Barcelona Lionel Messi 12-inch figure

Lionel Andrés Messi (born 24 June 1987) is an Argentine footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. He serves as the captain of his country’s national football team.

Since the 2014 World Cup is all the rage now with Argentina qualifying for the semi-finals against Netherlands, Lionel Messi cannot be ignored. Messi was elected man of the match in all three of Argentina’s group games and once again in the round of 16 match against Switzerland. Messi has won a whole accolade of awards and is commonly ranked as the best player in the world and rated by some in the sport as the greatest of all time

So I guess it’s only appropriate that some 1/6 scale toy company made a 12-inch figure of Lionel Messi. Futbol Club Barcelona Messi was the choice by ZCWO (ZC World) although Argentina threads would also be a good choice, especially since it’s World Cup season. But then again, the World Cup only comes around every four years and Messi will continue to ply his trade at FC Barcelona year after year. The guy is only 27 and had many more years to contribute to his club and country.

Yes, there’s a third Revol Mini. Yes, it’s an Iron Man.

Revol Mini is a line that isn’t even out yet, but it’s already starting to feel old to me. Yes, there was a new version of Snake. Then it was coupled with Kinnikuman, which while he is a great figure, it’s one that has been done before. Then the teases started for the third figure in the line. It was featuring figures punching each other! Locked in hand to hand combat! Could it be possibly Hajime no Ippo figures? Other wrestlers than Kinnikuman? Nope, it’s Iron Man Mark VI.

I really wanted this line to be something. Instead, it’s just a scale-down of things they did before. I understand that Kaiyodo needs to bring out the money-makers, but could they at least give us something we haven’t received in multiple lines in even more forms? How long is it before Evangelion gets the revamp too? What went from tempered excitement for me has now become just bleh for me. I was hoping for a lot more and instead it’s just more Iron Man. This disappointment is coming from someone who really likes Iron Man at that!

It is a good figure from the looks of things, but I’m just bored by Revoltechs at this point. Combine my boredom with the fact that this is going to be selling for ¥2,600 for a smaller-scaled figure and I’ve lost complete interest. If you are still interested, Revol Mini Iron Man Mark VI will be available this August.

It’s finally time to talk about Playmates’ figures for the upcoming TMNT movie

Many images of Playmates’ figures for Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film have stealthy made their way across the internet in recent months, either avoiding (or outright ignoring) cease & desist take-down notices from either Bay’s powerful Hollywood lawyers or Playmates’ own legal representation. However, now that the trailers are out, it seems like the “Iron Lawyer Curtain” is beginning to fall since an increasing number of sites are keeping their stories up which makes this a great time to discuss the figures that we couldn’t really talk about before now.

Michael Bay, of course, was previously known for butchering the Transformers franchise with a slew of awful films where each movie somehow managed to raise fans’ hopes into believing it might be good only to massively disappoint once again. As such, the news that he’d giving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — another venerable childhood cartoon — the same treatment was met with, well, let’s say understandable apprehension (or we could go with disdain, disgust, anger, etc).

More after the jump.
