Holy mackerel! Check out the first colored pics of figma Nanase Haruka from Free!

Thanks to Hobby Stock we’re getting our first colored look at figma Nanase Haruka from Free! Now, I won’t pretend to know anything about Free!, but I do know good figma when I see them. It’s my opinion, but I’ve always thought that Max Factory does the skinny male anime character body type better than Bandai does in S.H. Figuarts. One of the best examples is one of the first figma, Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass, which had an amazingly slender body that still holds up seven years later. Getting back to the point, Haruka here is another example of MF doing guys right and even capturing his swimmer’s muscle tone perfectly. I’m sure some of the ladies out there appreciate the sculpting more than I do, but it really is well done.

As for the accessories I won’t pretend to know what context they’re used in, but they are kinda interesting. I assume, but can’t say for sure that his goggles can be worn since he also comes with a section of diving platform. I really don’t know why his other accessory is an apron, but I’m sure there’s a good reason. And for those able to get an order in at Hobby Stock they’ll be able to get an exclusive filet of grilled mackerel. Again, I have no idea why, maybe it’s a visual metaphor?

He’ll be out in September, but we don’t yet know what his price will be. Given that he’s now being seen in color I’m sure it’s only a short matter of time before pre-orders show up with even more photos. HS also announced that the second figma in the Free! line will be Tachibana Makoto so there’s something new for fans to get excited for!

Holy gender-bending, Batman! Monster High Dolls have been customized to look like Batman rogues

Rachel Hell Haus of Dolls has produced some female versions of Batman’s more popular rogues in a series of Monster High doll customs entitled “Daughters of DC villains” which, among other things, includes a “Ms.” Freeze, female Joker (not Duela Dent, the Joker’s alleged daughter), and a female Scarecrow, among others. Batman’s female villains (Ivy, Harley, and Catwoman specifically) also received “daughters” although those are obviously less zany.

Some of the designs (like Freeze) came out looking great while others might be hard to figure out within the context (such as a far too thin, too tall Penguin’s daughter who is only recognizable for the umbrella). Scarecrow’s daughter (“Scarecrowette”?) notably features a masked and unmasked look. Without that mask, her most identifying characteristic would be the syringe-tipped glove that the Scarecrow wore in Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Although the concept is a little out there, the customs look neat. My favorites are probably Scarecrow, Freeze, and Joker. How about you?

Holy halibut! Kotobukiya’s ArtFX+ Batgirl revealed

Kotobukiya has unveiled its ArtFX+ New 52 Batgirl (previously teased just yesterday) and she looks great. The ArtFX+ Batgirl was previously shown unpainted during Kotobukiya’s NYCC panel (see the full Tomopop coverage here).

As fans are no doubt aware, the New 52 brought some rather substantial changes to the DC continuity and the decision to un-cripple Barbara Gordon (the best known and most beloved Batgirl) through an experimental surgery may certainly number among the more significant revamps. Her costume itself, despite a more armored look, remains relatively close to what we’ve come to expect of the character and Kotobukiya has translated the style remarkably well although some may find the glossy black paint to be a bit much. The sculpting on this one is absolutely beautiful but, if there’s one thing I don’t like, it would be that slightly down-turned head. The tilted down head seems to be something of a trend in this line, as I recall a few others having the same design choice.

It’s no great secret that I’m a Batgirl fan and have generally preferred the character over Robin as a Batman side-kick or solo act (Tim Drake remains my favorite Robin and the Burt Ward Robin made for far greater comic accompaniment than Batgirl on the Adam West Batman series). As such, I’m happy to see that this design translated over so well.

Batgirl will join the likes of her BFF Supergirl, “rival” Catwoman (reviewed), and the Justice League in the ArtFX+ line. Given the number of hits so far, I can’t wait to see who Kotobukiya may introduce next. Batgirl is slated to release in June.
