Soul of Chogokin GaoGaiGar pre-orders begin, don’t last long

After appearing in scans a few weeks back, Bandai’s Soul of Chogokin GaoGaiGar went up for pre-order yesterday. Despite the wallet-battering ¥32,400 price tag customers weren’t deterred as several stores sold out immediately. As of writing Amiami, Hobby Search and Hobbylink Japan have closed orders (though there’s still a chance a second wave will become available). He’s still up at several of the smaller stores however.

Stoking the frenzy, the Amiami Blog also released a full hands-on preview that confirms several tantalising facts like size (big!), level of detail (high!) and transformation ability (show accurate!). As ever for the Soul of Chogokin line there’s minute attention to show accuracy, with little stuff like having full rolling tracks on DrillGao or a sculpted cockpit in LinerGao. Disappointingly, the preview also confirms that accessories will be limited to replacement hands, although you do get hands for both GaiGar and GaoGaiGar, including specific hands for the Hell & Heaven attack. The Dividing Driver is also present and correct, but there’s no sign of a Goldion Hammer, which suggests to me an extremely lucrative add-on coming at a later date. There’s also no sign of the traditionally fabulous SoC base, though I’m sure that’ll be in there somewhere.

Despite the incredibly high cost, this really does look to be the ultimate toy for any fan of the show, and I can tell you I buckled almost immediately and put in an order. Most stores are offering hefty discounts on that list price, which makes the whole affair slightly less insane. It’s a tough call, but I’d make it soon – I don’t think he’s going to hang around for long.

New scans reveal Soul of Chogokin GaoGaiGar release date, price

Ever since it was announced last November, I’ve been chomping at the bit to know more about Soul of Chogokin GaoGaiGar. Who wouldn’t be eager to see more of one of the all-time great super robots joining the undoubted king of mecha figure lines? Now, thanks to a fresh scan, we’ve got a few more juicy details.

Firstly, we’ve got a bunch of nice full colour pictures. There’s pretty clear confirmation on a couple of things. Firstly, GaoGaiGar will indeed split into its component parts – GaiGar, LinerGao, StealthGao and DrillGao are all present and correct. Furthermore, GaiGar will also be able to transform into its lion form, Galeon, and of course the four will combine to form the main robot. That’s a damn impressive bit of toy engineering considering how much cheating the original anime had to do to make that happen.

The second bit of pertinent news is a bit less cheery, and it’s the price. There’s no real way to cushion this blow, so let’s just put it out there – THIRTY TWO THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED YEN. That’s…a lot of money! Even by Soul of Chogokin standards it’s on the high end. You don’t have that much time to save up either, as GaoGaiGar will be crushing evil this December. Naturally, we’ll bring you news about pre-orders, immediately after we’ve openly wept at our bank accounts.

Landmarks gone wild! Gallery appears for the Chogokin Tower of the Sun Robot

Bluefin Tamashii Nations has released a photo gallery for Bandai’s upcoming kinda creepy Chogokin Tower of the Sun Robot (previously seen at

The Tower of the Sun was the somewhat nightmarish symbol of the 1970 World’s Fair (or Expo ’70) held in Osaka, Japan, and has been made even more frightening by having the whole thing turn into a robot… making me likely to avoid Osaka altogether if I ever visit Japan.

The Chogokin Tower of the Sun Robot can be displayed simply as the Tower of the Sun besides having the ability to having an”Robot Type and [an] Armored Type” transformations; either way, it looks like something straight out of Doctor Who. or a Super Sentei Series.

If you like the design, just be forewarned that it’ll have a US$168 list price if ordering domestically (expect Western retailers who previously listed it to drop the price accordingly).
